Injuries resulting from cave-ins, falls, falling loads, hazardous atmospheres and improper use of mobile equipment pose a serious risk to workers.
Never enter a trench that is unprotected. Various types of protective systems include Sloping, Shoring and Shielding systems for trench walls. Become familiar with these protective systems. OSHA also requires trenches be inspected daily and as conditions change by a competent person prior to worker entry.
Ladders, steps ramps or other safe means of employee access and egress is also required in trench excavations 4 feet or deeper. Proper positioning of loads and equipment away from the edges of a trench will also reduce the hazards. Know where any underground utilities are located and test for low oxygen, hazardous fumes and toxic gases.
