The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently released a study that shows speed cameras yield long-term safety benefits. The seven-year study, conducted in Washington, D.C., indicates that speed cameras change long-term driver behavior and decrease the number of tragic accidents. The camera program reduced the likelihood of a driver exceeding the speed limit (by more than 10 mph) by 59 percent and reduced the chance of a fatality or tragic accident by 19 percent.
