Credit Card and Debit Card Transaction Fee Coming This Summer

Western National has long accepted payment of premium via credit and debit cards. We have absorbed the fees charged by the banks that manage these cards as an expense. This expense, along with others, make their way back to policyholders through the rates they pay for coverage. This means that all policyholders are absorbing the cost of credit and debit card fees. The fees charged and the frequency of use of credit and debit cards has increased significantly in recent years, and we believe a fairer practice is to charge the fees directly to those policyholders that choose to pay using the methods that generate the fee.

We are currently working to modify our payment processing screens to inform policyholders about the fee they will incur if they choose to pay by credit or debit card. The fee will be 3.1% of the payment amount subject to a minimum of $2.00 and will be due as part of the transaction they are submitting. AutoPay, online ACH, and check payments will continue to be processed without a service fee.

We expect the work on our system to be completed early this summer and will provide more information ahead of releasing this new functionality.

Please contact your Regional Agency Manager if you have any questions or concerns.
