Financial results remain strong in 2025, with revenues running above our seasonal plan, and losses and expenses running below plan. Through April 30, 2025, written premium for our Group, including affiliate Michigan Millers, is $492.5 million. Our loss ratio of 53.1% includes $62 million of reserve strengthening in anticipation of storm season. Our underwriting expense ratio is 31.8%, versus our goal of 33.5%, and our combined ratio is 94.8%, which is below the Plan of 94.9%. Though it is still early in the year, this solid start for our Group is reassuring as we prepare for volatility in our results with the storm season still ahead.
In March, I had the opportunity to participate in the CEO Roundtable hosted by NAMIC, the foremost advocate and thought leader for the mutual insurance industry. For two days, I had the pleasure to interact offline with a couple of dozen leaders from peer companies throughout the U.S. We were able to set our own agenda and divide and conquer to explore topics of common interest. Some of the more current and relevant topics included the impact of social inflation on loss settlements, third-party litigation financing, talent development and succession planning, practical evolution of artificial intelligence, and the impact of an active climate in recent years. We also spent time working with NAMIC staff to shape the priorities for their industry policy agenda on a federal level.
It is a highlight to spend time addressing so many shared issues with peer professionals serving the purpose for which we exist. I always return energized with a renewed passion for our industry and the team I have the pleasure to share this career journey with.
This year, the Senior Leadership Team at Western National and I were pleased to name Phil Campbell, Senior Managing Director at Aon, the recipient of Western National’s 2025 President’s Award. The President’s Award is a special award given to an individual or independent agency in recognition of sustained support and impactful partnership to the industry, to the Independent Agent model, and to Western National’s Group of companies.
Phil was at the forefront of getting Western National – then an A.M. Best ‘B+’ rated company – on its feet after 9/11. Creative reinsurance solutions and strong relationships with our reinsurance partners, including Phil, allowed for prudent reinsurance coverage at a time when Western National was not as financially strong as we are today. In addition to his key role in our many years of successful partnership, Phil’s impact has been hugely evident in the numerous insurance professionals that he has hired, mentored, and trained. We are delighted to have the opportunity to recognize Phil with this award.
As “The Relationship Company”, we believe that communication and collaboration are key factors to a successful partnership.
