Celebrating 125 Years

This year marks Western National’s 125th anniversary, also known as a quasquicentennial.

Our company began as The Mutual Creamery and Cheese Factory Fire Insurance Company of Minnesota to provide protection for creamery and cheese cooperative associations. In May 1901, we received our charter from the State of Minnesota and officially opened for business with the tagline “It’s Better with Butter.”

Much has changed since those early days, including the company's transition to the Western National name in 1970. Throughout our history, markets have changed, technology has evolved, and customer expectations have shifted, yet one thing has remained constant: our commitment to serving policyholders and supporting the independent agents who represent us.

As a mutual company, our strength has always come from people and relationships. We are thankful for the generations of employees, agents, and policyholders who have helped shape the company we are today.

Thank you for being part of our story and for helping us build on a legacy 125 years in the making.

Second Quarter Financials

We close out the second quarter with total Group assets of $3.5 billion, direct written premium of $763.7 million, and a combined ratio of 93.9%. While growth in the first half of the year has been slow in a competitive and softening market, strong retention continues to sustain solid profitability. Our focus for the next half of the year remains on disciplined growth that delivers long-term performance.
