Frequently Asked Questions on Watercraft and Road & Trail Vehicles
1. How do you cover E-Bikes?
E-bike coverage depends on the bike’s maximum speed. If the bike can travel 20 MPH or less, it can be covered under a homeowners policy by adding the Motorized Vehicle endorsement. If it exceeds 20 MPH, it should be written on a Road & Trail policy.
2. When is a watercraft covered under a home policy?
Wisconsin Only: Watercraft liability is covered on the home policy for all outboard watercraft. If physical damage coverage is requested, the watercraft must be written on a Watercraft policy, and liability may be excluded from that policy. All other types of watercraft, except outboards, will need to be written on a Watercraft policy.
All other states: Liability for outboard watercraft is covered under the homeowners policy only if the motor is 75 horsepower or less. If the horsepower exceeds 75 hp, or if physical damage coverage is requested, the watercraft must be written on a Watercraft policy. Any watercraft that is not an outboard with 75 horsepower or less will also need to be insured on a Watercraft policy.
3. How do you cover docks?
If the dock can be removed from the water, Coverage C will prevail. If scheduling the dock on an HO3 or HO5 policy, it should be listed on the policy for the location where the dock is used, and it will be covered on a replacement cost basis. Wave action damage is covered.
Docks will be covered under Coverage B when permanently installed in the water.
A dock may also be scheduled on a Watercraft policy, where it is covered on an actual cash value basis.
4. What is the difference between an ATV and a UTV?
An ATV (all-terrain vehicle) is typically designed for a single rider and is smaller, lighter, and more maneuverable. It is steered using handlebars, similar to a motorcycle.
A UTV (utility task vehicle) features side-by-side seating and is operated with a steering wheel and pedals. It is generally larger and may also include additional features such as a roof or roll cage.
